Fiery passion or unshakable practicality: which sounds like you? Astrology assigns each of the twelve zodiac signs its own strengths, weaknesses and relationship needs. Discover which element is associated with your sign and which pairings are considered especially intriguing. But your Sun sign isn’t everything: your Ascendant, Descendant and Moon sign also play a role in the astrological interpretation of your personality.

What determines your zodiac sign?

Your zodiac sign is determined by the position of the Sun at the time of your birth, which is why it’s also called your Sun sign. The zodiac begins with Aries and ends with Pisces. In between are Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius.

This system has its roots in antiquity. People in Mesopotamia were already observing constellations. In Babylon, the year was divided into twelve equal parts. The astrological system is also linked to the equinoxes and solstices. The zodiac signs and the constellations they’re named after don’t correspond exactly.

Four elements, four distinct temperaments

The four-element theory is part of astrological character interpretation. Three zodiac signs are assigned to each element. This classification describes basic personality traits and also plays a role in astrological compatibility:

  • Fire: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are associated with confidence, willpower, passion and a love of freedom.
  • Earth: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are considered practical and driven. Routines and clear priorities help them feel grounded.
  • Air: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are associated with creativity, sociability, adaptability and mental agility.
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are considered sensitive and empathetic. Their emotional world can also seem mysterious to others.

All twelve zodiac signs: personality and love

Aries: Passion at full speed

Brave, direct and full of energy, Aries gets things done and loves trying new things. Their honesty is refreshing, but their impatience can hurt. In love, they fall hard and bring plenty of romance. But if they have to wait too long, their enthusiasm may fade. Leo and Sagittarius share their fiery temperament, while Gemini and Aquarius bring plenty of energy. Cancer and Virgo can be more prone to friction. Talk about your different expectations early on.

Taurus: Loyalty meets a love of the good life

According to astrology, you can count on a Taurus. They value security, beautiful things and familiar company. Their less appealing traits include stubbornness, jealousy and stinginess. In relationships, they like to show affection through gifts, good food and cozy evenings. Capricorn and Cancer are considered good matches. With Leo or Aquarius, differing needs may clash. Make it clear that thoughtfulness isn’t measured by the price of a gift.

Gemini: Curious and always on the move

Open, sociable and adaptable, Geminis make connections with ease. Their changeable nature can sometimes come across as moody or inconsistent. When flirting, they love keeping things light, surprising and varied. Aquarius and Sagittarius share their appetite for new experiences and travel. Virgos often want more structure, while Cancers want more commitment. So check whether you’re looking for the same kind of relationship beyond the exciting flirt—and make room for quiet nights together, too.

Cancer: Big feelings and a tender heart

Compassion, loyalty and a strong sense of family define Cancer in astrology. This water sign is a thoughtful listener, but may quickly withdraw when facing their own difficulties. They can be sensitive, possessive and irritable. In relationships, closeness and romance matter; talking about feelings is especially important. Pisces and Scorpio understand this emotional depth. Aries and Aquarius, on the other hand, often have different priorities. Choose your words carefully during arguments.

Leo: Charisma and high standards

Leo loves attention, takes responsibility and impresses with loyalty and ambition. Their strong presence can sometimes seem arrogant or controlling. In love, they’re generous and enjoy being admired, but don’t want to give up their freedom. Aries and Sagittarius share their fire, while Libra complements them with diplomatic charm. Astrology describes bigger differences with earth signs. What matters is feeling appreciated for more than just your appearance.

Virgo: Look closely and choose thoughtfully

Honesty, order and dependability are hallmarks of Virgo. Their analytical eye makes them thorough, but can also make them overly cautious or a bit of a know-it-all. They’re discerning when choosing a partner and appreciate education and good conversation. Another Virgo or a Capricorn understands their priorities; Scorpio brings passion. Aries and Leo may be more challenging. Make a conscious effort to leave room for closeness amid chores, routines and carefully laid plans.

Libra: Charm in search of harmony

Respectful, fair and diplomatic, Libra wants everyone to get along. Their sense of style stands out—and so does their indecisiveness. In relationships, they look for sophistication and an attractive partner. Leo is happy to take the lead and can make decisions easier. Taurus is also considered a good match. Astrology describes bigger differences with Capricorn or Pisces. Express what you want instead of hoping every difficult situation will resolve itself.

Scorpio: Depth, never half-measures

Willpower, ambition and fearlessness make Scorpio an intense sign. Their mysterious allure is fascinating, but jealousy and holding grudges can strain relationships. They don’t trust easily; when they love, they do so passionately and with high expectations. Virgo and Cancer are considered good matches. Things can be trickier with freedom-loving Sagittarius. The key is not to confuse passion with control: reading someone’s private messages without permission crosses a line.

Sagittarius: Adventure needs room to roam

Optimistic and open-minded, Sagittarius is drawn to new experiences. They love their independence and say exactly what they think. That can come across as carefree, boastful or tactless. A relationship should offer warmth without feeling restrictive. Aries, Leo, Gemini and Aquarius share their open-mindedness. With Capricorn or Scorpio, differing expectations may clash. Shared activities suit their adventurous spirit, while restrictive expectations can put a strain on the relationship.

Capricorn: Commitment and ambition

Responsible, patient and realistic, Capricorn pursues its goals. Work obligations carry a lot of weight, and they can also seem reserved and stubborn. In love, they want loyalty, closeness and an equal partner. Virgo and Taurus share many of their values. Pisces can complement them with their intuitive nature. Astrology describes challenges with Cancer and Libra. Talk about how much room your relationship will have alongside career and other commitments.

Aquarius: Inventive and independent

Charisma, tolerance and originality are among Aquarius’s defining traits. Their love of freedom can come across as rebellious, and their perseverance may fluctuate. They’re often cautious about commitment, but can be loyal and devoted in a relationship. They’re especially drawn to a confident, intellectually stimulating partner. Gemini and Sagittarius suit their open-minded nature. Taurus and Cancer often want different kinds of stability. Talk early about your needs for closeness and independence.

Pisces: Romance with an open heart

Creative, idealistic and empathetic, Pisces devote themselves to the people they love. Their generosity can leave them open to being taken advantage of; naivety and sentimentality are considered potential weaknesses. In relationships, they’re deeply caring and want to solve problems. Cancer understands their emotional world, while Taurus brings a practical touch. Aries and Leo can clash with them temperamentally. Being helpful is valuable, but it shouldn’t cost you your independence.

Which elements are especially compatible?

As a general astrological rule, signs belonging to the same element are considered compatible. Fire and air, as well as earth and water, are also described as good combinations. Use these pairings as a conversation starter: How important are security, variety, closeness or independence to you? These needs come up again and again in descriptions of the individual signs.

Ascendant, Descendant and Moon sign

Don’t quite recognize yourself in your Sun sign? Your Ascendant is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. In astrology, it describes how you come across and how others perceive you. You’ll need your exact birth time to calculate it.

The Descendant, directly opposite your Ascendant, represents what you expect from relationships. Your Moon sign is determined by the Moon’s position at the time of your birth and is associated with deep feelings and unconscious needs. Online calculators can help you work out these signs.

Conclusion: Discover more than your love match

Your zodiac sign can offer interesting prompts for reflecting on your strengths, sensitivities and relationship needs. You may get an even fuller picture by considering your element, Ascendant and Moon sign. Don’t just ask yourself who astrology says is a good match for you—consider which of the needs described actually resonate with you and which ones you want to talk about.
